Georginio Wijnaldum is reportedly prioritising a transfer back to the Premier League this summer after a disappointing spell at Paris Saint-Germain.
According to TEAMtalk, Arsenal, West Ham, United and Newcastle United have reportedly been handed a huge boost in the race to sign Georginio Wijnaldum, as the 31-year-old midfielder is eyeing a Premier League return should he leave Paris Saint-Germain this summer.
Despite having only moved to Paris last year after refusing an offer to extend his stay at Liverpool, the Dutch international could again be on the move come summer after a pretty forgetful stint with the French giants so far. Once seemed to be an ideal move for all parties involved, it has not turned out as planned for the former Reds ace.
The Dutch maestro has found game-time hard to come by at the Parisian club, while his feeble displays in the middle of the park have not helped his case either, with Marco Verratti, Danilo Pereira, Idrissa Gueye and Leandro Paredes all ahead of him in the pecking order under Mauricio Pochettino. He was also not involved at all in both legs of PSG’s Champions League Last 16 clash against Real Madrid.
And while he has enjoyed a decent run in the side lately, should he feel he is no longer part of PSG’s long-term plans moving forward, there is seemingly no shortage of suitors for the Dutchman, with top European clubs queuing up for his signature.
Atletico Madrid and AC Milan are interested in the dynamic midfielder, although it looks like Wijnaldum is leaning toward a return to England. As per the fresh reports, Newcastle, Arsenal, and West Ham are all monitoring Wijnaldum’s situation and could make a swoop in the summer.
Wijnaldum was heavily linked with a switch to Arsenal in the January transfer window. While that never materialised, the PSG ace could again be back on the radars of the north London outfit.
Wijnaldum does not exactly match Mikel Arteta’s recruitment profile, but with Mohamed Elneny out of contract at the end of the season and uncertainty around Granit Xhaka’s future, the club may do well by bringing in a proven Premier League midfielder in Wijnaldum.
As for West Ham, midfield reinforcements remains high on the list of priorities, given the struggles of Alex Kral, while Mark Noble is set to hang up his boots. This will leave David Moyes short in the midfield department ahead of next season. Wijnaldum’s exceptional technical ability may offer Moyes a different option and could play an important role in this Hammers squad if Declan Rice ends up leaving.
A romantic return to Newcastle was also mooted in January, but the club’s fragile league position likely stopped the midfielder from coming back to Tyneside. However, the tables have turned since, and Newcastle find themselves surging towards Premier League safety. A midfielder of Wijnaldum’s experience, quality and winning mindset will be a brilliant acquisition for the Magpies’ high ambitions.
The 31-year-old will still have two years remaining on his current contract with PSG when the summer rolls around. It will be intriguing to watch where the Dutch international moves this summer, but as it stands Premier League seems the likely destination.
