AC Milan have expressed the desire to sign Tottenham Hotspur forward Steven Bergwijn, having already established contact.

According to Gazzetta Dello Sport, AC Milan are expected to make a move for Steven Bergwijn in the upcoming summer transfer window. The Serie A giants are keen on adding more depth to their attacking unit, with the Tottenham Hotspur forward emerging as a viable option.

The report suggests the Milan hierarchy has already established contacts, seeking the possibility of signing Bergwijn next summer. The explosive forward is one of two Dutch players currently targeted by the Rossoneri, with the other being Sven Botman, who is an option for Tottenham.

Nevertheless, Milan’s interest in Bergwijn is hardly surprising amid fears over the long-term future of Rafael Leao. The Portuguese international has raised many eyebrows with his performances in Serie A this term, with Barcelona now among the clubs reportedly eyeing a summer swoop.

Leao’s potential exit could leave a massive void in Milan’s attacking unit, especially on the left side. And that is where Bergwijn comes into the fray, having made quite a name for himself during his time at PSV Eindhoven.

The 24-year-old is regarded as an explosive winger who can cause trouble for the opposition with his sheer pace out wide. It makes him quite a threat on the counter, while the Dutchman is equally capable of probing opposition defences with his skill in possession.

However, Bergwijn has not been able to live up to expectations since joining the Premier League in January 2020. During his ongoing two-year spell at Spurs, the attacker has racked up 74 competitive appearances, scoring only seven goals.

The Dutchman’s underwhelming numbers in the final third have restricted his overall game time in north London. In fact, the attacker has earned only four starts in the Premier League this term, falling behind the likes of Dejan Kulusevski, Lucas Moura and Son Heung-min in the pecking order.

Bergwijn’s struggles could potentially compel Tottenham to offload the forward in the summer as it could be an opportunity for them to recoup most of the amount they spent on the player two years ago. The sale, in that regard, could be useful in helping Antonio Conte land his desired targets in the summer, with Barca’s Memphis Depay emerging as a potential option.
