Arsenal, Tottenham eyeing summer move for Clement Lenglet

Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly among the clubs interested in signing Clement Lenglet from Barcelona in the summer.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Clement Lenglet is destined to leave Barcelona in the summer transfer window. The French defender is a target for several clubs across Europe, including Premier League bigwigs Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.

Clement Lenglet joined Barcelona following an excellent 2017/18 campaign with Sevilla. While the 26-year-old made a strong initial impression at Camp Nou, his performance levels have steadily deteriorated over the last two years, resulting in him falling down the pecking order.

Lenglet is currently behind Gerard Pique, Ronald Araujo and Eric Garcia in the order of preference, becoming a bit-part player for Barcelona as a result. The Frenchman has garnered just 790 minutes of game-time across 16 appearances in all competitions in the ongoing campaign.

As the summer transfer window approaches, it looks like Lenglet’s time at Barcelona is coming to an end, with the Blaugrana prepared to offload him as they prepare for Andreas Christensen’s arrival. Lenglet’s next destination could be the Premier League, with Arsenal and Tottenham among his prospective suitors.

The interest from Arsenal is surprising, considering Mikel Arteta has built a fairly solid central defensive partnership of Ben White and Gabriel Magalhaes. But beyond the duo, there is a shortage of quality options at the Arsenal manager’s disposal, which explains why the Gunners could be keen on signing Lenglet from Barcelona.

As for Tottenham, Spurs will need to delve into the market for a centre-back in the summer transfer window, as Cristian Romero and Eric Dier have been the only reliable centre-backs for Antonio Conte. While Ben Davies has not been poor, he is approaching the final phase of his career, necessitating the arrival of a new centre-back.

Lenglet is a viable target for Tottenham, but Spurs and Arsenal will face stiff competition from Sevilla and Atletico Madrid in pursuit of the Barcelona defender. As for Barcelona, the Catalan giants have reportedly reached a verbal agreement to sign Andreas Christensen, whose arrival from Chelsea seems to be a mere formality.
