La Liga heavyweights Barcelona are reportedly monitoring the situation of 27-year-old Spanish international Saul Niguez, with a summer move possible.
According to a report by Spanish publication SPORT, Saul Niguez is the subject of interest from Barcelona over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The Blaugrana could include the 27-year-old Spanish international in the deal that sees Antoine Griezmann join Atletico Madrid permanently.
Saul Niguez has suffered a staggering dip in form and fortunes in the last couple of years, having gone from a pivotal player for Atletico Madrid to being loaned out to Chelsea. But the Spaniard has failed to resurrect his stuttering career at Chelsea, having been a bit-part player throughout his stint with the Blues thus far.
The 27-year-old has garnered only 791 minutes of action for Chelsea, starting just eight of the 38 games he has been available. With his spell with the west Londoners heading nowhere, Saul is destined to return to Atletico Madrid in the summer transfer window. But Barcelona could well be his next destination.
Barcelona had been heavily linked with Saul before his move to Chelsea was formalised in the summer transfer window. The Blaugrana had reportedly even rekindled their interest in the Spanish international ahead of the January transfer window, but he ended up staying put at Stamford Bridge.
The continued interest in Saul could be stemming from the uncertainties surrounding the future of Riqui Puig and the advancing years of Sergio Busquets. The 27-year-old’s versatility makes him an attractive option for Barcelona, and they could practically sign him for nothing if the pieces fall into place.
Antoine Griezmann is currently on loan from Barcelona at Atletico Madrid and could join Los Rojiblancos for good in the summer transfer window. But the reigning La Liga champions could use Saul as a bargaining chip to land the Frenchman permanently.
The Catalan giants are closely monitoring the 27-year-old Spanish international’s situation, with Xavi Hernandez an admirer of his talent. So it won’t be surprising to see Saul joining Barcelona in the summer transfer window, with Griezmann completing a permanent return to the Wanda Metropolitano. If not, Barcelona will not have a shortage of alternatives, with Ryan Gravenberch also on their radar.
