Newcastle United rival Aston Villa for Liverpool ace Joe Gomez

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is facing an uncertain future at Anfield, with Newcastle United and Aston Villa vying for his services.

A recent report from The Athletic has offered an update on the future of Joe Gomez. The defender has struggled with game-time at Anfield this season, and his uncertain situation at the club is being closely monitored by Newcastle United, who are prepared to rival Aston Villa for his signature in the coming summer.

A product of the Charlton Athletic youth academy, Gomez was regarded as one of the most gifted English defenders when he initially made his breakthrough at Liverpool. He even played a key role in helping the Reds to win their first ever Premier League title during the 2019/20 campaign.

However, the defender’s progress has stalled over the past year or so, especially after the patella problems in 2020 that ruled him out of action for almost eight months. His recovery coincided with the return of other star defenders in the team in Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip, while Liverpool also opted to sign Ibrahima Konate last summer.

As a result, Gomez has fallen down in the pecking order, with his only start in the league coming in the recent win over Norwich City. His struggles with game time have led to speculation over his long-term future at Anfield, especially with the FIFA World Cup just around the corner.

Aston Villa have already expressed the desire to sign Joe Gomez next season, with coach Steven Gerrard particularly keen on the services of the Liverpool centre-back. He could be an upgrade over Calum Chambers, who was brought in as a replacement for Axel Tuanzebe after his loan agreement was terminated in January.

The Villans, though, are set to face stiff competition from Newcastle United in pursuit of Gomez. Currently embroiled in a relegation battle, the Magpies are set to make major waves in the transfer market next summer, with coach Eddie Howe already eyeing moves for star players such as Paul Pogba.

While Gomez may not command a similar price tag, his experience in English football could make him an ideal defensive partner for another marquee defensive signing. Sven Botman is the likeliest candidate after his January move to St. James’ Park was blocked by LOSC Lille.

Liverpool, for their part, did block Gomez’s exit in January, but they could be open to letting the defender move elsewhere in the summer. However, a lot may depend on how they fare in the market, as Jurgen Klopp’s priorities may not include signing a new centre-back to replace Gomez.
