Newcastle United in transfer tussle to sign Pablo Sarabia

Newcastle United are among the clubs interested in securing the services of Paris Saint-Germain attacker Pablo Sarabia, who is currently on loan at Sporting CP.

According to Fichajes, Newcastle United are among a host of clubs keeping close tabs on 29-year-old Paris Saint-Germain forward Pablo Sarabia, who is impressing away on loan at Portuguese outfit Sporting CP.

The 29-year-old came through the ranks at Real Madrid but only managed a single senior appearance for Los Blancos. He went on to represent Getafe and Sevilla, where he made his name as a goal-scoring attacking midfielder, boasting a total of 116 goal contributions from 297 competitive appearances across his spell with both clubs.

His sensational form in the 2018/19 campaign prompted Paris Saint-Germain to trigger his €18 million release clause to prise him away from Sevilla. However, throughout his time at PSG, the Spanish winger failed to become a regular starter in Les Parisiens’ star-studded attack.

Still, he was a consistent performer and chipped in with 22 goals and 12 assists in 79 appearances. The blockbuster arrival of Lionel Messi at Parc des Princes meant the Spaniard fell further down in the pecking order under Mauricio Pochettino. It resulted in a subsequent year-long loan move to Sporting CP to get regular minutes in the Champions League and remain in Luis Enrique’s plans for the 2022 World Cup.

The winger is having an impressive campaign in Portugal and has thrived as a key member of Sporting’s attack, registering 12 goals and nine assists in 32 matches for Sporting across all competitions. He has also enjoyed a rich vein of form on the continental stage and has featured in all of Sporting’s seven Champions League games (2 goals, 1 assist).

With a summer return to PSG edging closer, it is a foregone conclusion that the Spaniard will look to find a new permanent club. There appears to be no shortage of suitors, with both Sevilla and Villareal offering a return to familiar Spanish shores, while La Liga leaders Real Madrid are also monitoring him. Now, cash-rich Newcastle United have also entered the race for his signature.

Despite spending a fortune on transfers in January, the Magpies ended up bringing just a single forward in Chris Wood as deadline day moves for Jesse Lingard and Hugo Ekitike failed. Based on their recent links to Crystal Palace attacker Eberechi Eze, it appears they are likely to dip into the market for a creative attacking midfielder in the summer.

To that end, Sarabia could be a fantastic addition and will bring a wealth of top-level experience. The Spaniard is left-footed, which would provide an excellent balance to the Magpies’ attack. With his creativity, vision and goal-scoring capabilities, he can prove to be a massive asset to the Toon. The 29-year-old is contracted with PSG until 2024, but the French giants could make him available for a cut-price fee in the summer.
