Manchester City could explore signing Matheus Nunes in the summer window after Pep Guardiola was impressed by the midfielder’s display in the Champions League.

According to Correio da Manha, as relayed by Sport Witness, Manchester City are rumoured to be interested in Sporting CP midfielder Matheus Nunes in the summer window. Pep Guardiola is reportedly keen on the Portuguese star as the Catalan was impressed with his performance in the Champions League against his side.

Manchester City could be set for a busy summer window with Pep Guardiola set to bring in key reinforcements in several areas. After failing to sign Tottenham star Harry Kane previously, a striker is their main focus in the next window.

Despite signing Julian Alvarez in the January window, Guardiola still wants a good number nine. However, City could also look to sign a new central midfielder as they look for a long-term replacement for veteran star Fernandinho.

In an attempt to fix the issue, Manchester City have reportedly registered interest in Matheus Nunes, who impressed during Sporting’s loss to the Premier League giants in the Champions League.

Despite the 5-0 defeat, the 23-year-old Portuguese international was one of Sporting’s bright sparks and kept his composure despite Man City’s total dominance. The press in Portugal quickly linked the midfielder to the Premier League champions.

It’s not the first time the 23-year-old Portuguese international is linked with a Premier League side, with previous links to Newcastle United in the January window. Even Everton were reportedly monitoring the midfielder at one point.

Back in August, Sporting reportedly sought at least €20 million. Given his performances in the new season, this amount could slightly increase in the summer, especially if Manchester City are serious about their interest.

Nunes has had a tremendous season with Sporting, making 37 appearances across all competitions. He has also proven useful with goals and assists, with the midfielder contributing decently to the cause.

Nunes has a release clause worth €60 million in his contract, although Sporting are not expected to ask for that much. It is understood they will be content with suitors paying around half that amount for the 23-year-old Portuguese international, who will be keen on taking the next step in his career this summer.
