AC Milan considering summer move for Steven Bergwijn

AC Milan are thinking of signing Steven Bergwijn in the summer window as the Tottenham star could leave the north London side.

According to Calciomercato, Steven Bergwijn has emerged as a potential target for AC Milan in the summer, with the Dutch attacker likely to move away from Tottenham.

Steven Bergwijn  began the season explosively when Spurs secured a surprise victory over champions Manchester City in their opening game. The Dutch attacker’s pace and ability to break the lines caught the eye, with many expecting him to enjoy a breakthrough campaign in the Premier League.

He continued performing in the next few games, only for injuries to curtail his progress. Tottenham subsequently capitulated under Nuno Espirito Santo, which led to the Portuguese being sacked by the club. Under new boss Antonio Conte, Bergwijn is yet to find his feet, despite showing glimpses of his talent.

Transfer market specialist Fabrizio Romano suggesting in early January that Spurs were looking to offload the winger in the window, as Ajax reportedly considered signing him. However, a transfer did not materialise as the month dragged on, with the attacker seemingly resigned to continue playing for the north London side.

He did make a telling contribution when he scored twice in injury time against Leicester City to hand Tottenham a dramatic win in the Premier League. However, Bergwijn has been considered a high-quality bench option since then, with Conte seemingly averse to starting him in games.

Harry Kane, Son Heung-Min, and Lucas Moura make it difficult for Bergwijn to get regular game-time, and this situation may not change anytime soon. Moreover, the arrival of Dejan Kulusevski from Juventus could further reduce his chances of playing, with the Dutch winger likely behind the Swede in the pecking order.

Hence, Bergwijn could explore leaving the club when the summer window opens up. The Dutch attacker has emerged on the radar of Serie A giants AC Milan, who are keen on recruiting long-term options to improve their quality in the final third.

They might also be putting plans in place in the event of Rafael Leao leaving the club in the summer. After a brilliant season under his belt, Arsenal are linked with the Portuguese attacker. Bergwijn could be considered a like for like replacement for the winger and might be available at an affordable price in the summer.

Yet, a move will depend on how much money Tottenham demand for the Dutch international. The Serie A giants might be open to a permanent move, although the Rossoneri do traditionally prefer temporary deals before committing to a player.
