Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has essentially termed Liverpool the favourites to beat Manchester City in the 2021/22 Premier League title race.

Liverpool and Manchester City are once again involved in a tight Premier League title race, with Pep Guardiola’s side currently enjoying a slim one-point advantage. On the other hand, Liverpool have a golden opportunity to overtake the defending champions when the two sides meet at the Etihad later this week.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, as quoted by Liverpool Echo, Wayne Rooney highlighted the importance of the crucial encounter coming up on Sunday. The Manchester United legend opined that Liverpool and Manchester City will not drop many points from now on, making the upcoming clash all the more enticing.

“The game on Sunday could decide where the title goes because the two teams, I don’t think any of them are going to drop points. They both might be the two best teams in Europe at the moment and I think City’s response to Liverpool winning the early kick-off was massive and that is what champions do.”

“When they’ve both got a pressure game, they take that pressure away and they win the game. Now we’ve got a very interesting game coming up on Sunday.”

The Manchester United record goalscorer was also asked to name his favourites for the Premier League title this season. While he wished that none of the two sides would win, he tipped the Reds to pip City to the Premier League title.

“I wish none of them [wins it]. I think it could go either way. Liverpool are on a great run of form, as are City. I think Liverpool can go there and win.”

While Manchester City have had mixed results recently, Liverpool are on a roll. They have won their last 11 Premier League matches and are expected to stretch City when the two sides face off this weekend.

Before Guardiola and Klopp’s sides get busy preparing for the mammoth clash coming up on Sunday, they also have the UEFA Champions League to look forward to. While City welcome Atletico Madrid to the Etihad on Wednesday, Liverpool travel to Portugal to face Benfica in their respective quarter-finals.
