Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has accused the current set of players of feigning injury to avoid playing for Erik ten Hag.

Manchester United have had a disappointing season by their standards, and they are set to miss out on UEFA Champions League qualification. It has been a tough campaign for the players as well as manager Erik ten Hag. The Dutchman has had to deal with several injury problems throughout the season, and Wayne Rooney has now questioned whether the club’s injured players could potentially be playing.

The Manchester United record goalscorer also feels that the players are not giving it their best under the Dutch manager and that their performances are below par. Rooney claims that the Manchester United squad has some very good players who have clearly underperformed this season.

“Some of these players have to look at themselves because when your manager is doing an interview and talking about attitudes not being right to play for Manchester United, that is a massive insult,” said Rooney via Mirror.

“If I saw my manager saying that, there’s no way I’d let that ride until the end of the season. And it looks like some players are just trying to get to the end of the season. And that’s my personal opinion.”

“If they are (playing for the manager) then they’re not showing it very well. There’s some very good players in that squad and their performances are way below par.

“As we look at the injuries they’ve picked up, some of those players can play. Some of those players can play, 100 per cent.”

Will Manchester United sack Erik ten Hag?

It will be interesting to see if the Red Devils decide to make a managerial change at the end of the season. It is no surprise that they will need to make changes in the summer. They will need to bring in quality players, and a managerial change might not be a bad idea.

It seems that Ten Hag has failed to get the best out of his team and a fresh start could be ideal for everyone. The Dutchman seems to have lost the dressing room as well. Recent reports have linked Manchester United with several candidates, with Hansi Flick eager to take up the job.

A club of Manchester United’s stature should be challenging for major trophies every season. But they have not been able to do so under the Dutchman this term. With that said, Manchester United will take on Manchester City in the FA Cup final, and it remains to be seen whether they can end the season on a high with a trophy.
