Tottenham urged to back Thomas Frank, sign a £100 million player

Former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood has urged the club to back Thomas Frank and sign a marquee star.

Thomas Frank’s future has become a big talking point as he hasn’t had the desired impact since taking charge last summer. Following Chelsea’s decision to sack Enzo Maresca, Frank is one of the favourites to be the next Premier League manager to lose his job.

Spurs are 13th in the league with 25 points in their 18 outings. While he did have a promising start, they haven’t been consistent enough, and there have been no signs of any significant progress. There have been calls to sack the former Brentford boss, but former Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood believes the club should stick with him and back him in the transfer market.

While speaking about Frank’s situation on TEAMtalk, Sherwood said: “They need to back Thomas Frank and give him signings that will fit into the system of a Tottenham team he is in charge of,”

“They got rid of Postecoglou after what I believe was a successful season. I know they finished 17th, but that is because they focused on the Europa League and that was the right decision because they won it. Ange’s job was to end the long wait for a piece of silverware and he delivered on that, but still got that sack.

“Where did that leave Thomas Frank when we went in? What is success for the next Spurs manager if the previous one got sacked for winning a major European trophy?

“For me, you have to stick with this manager and back him properly in the transfer market and that has not happened for a long time at Tottenham.

“Instead of signing players for £20m or £30m, put all the money in to sign a £100m player who can make the difference.

“Tottenham have not done that down the years and I look at the squad they have now and a lot of the players who are all at a similar level.”

Frank was handed the job last summer after Spurs decided to sack Ange Postecoglou, despite the fact that the Australian manager helped them win the Europa League, ending their long wait for a major silverware.

They brought in the Brentford boss with hopes of helping the club do better in both the league as well as the Champions League. He has led them in 27 matches this season and has 11 wins and 10 defeats.

They find themselves in the bottom half of the points table at the halfway mark, and it is simply not good enough for a club like Tottenham. As a result, the pressure is slowly mounting on Frank.

Sherwood on what Tottenham must do going forward

However, Sherwood believes Spurs need to be patient with him and give him time to build a team that is more suited to his style of football. Not only do they need to back him to turn things around, but he even wants the club to give him the players who can have a big impact.

Spurs have often stuck to a strategy where they tend to sign players from lower divisions or look for opportunities in the market. Sherwood feels they need to change things up and go all out to sign marquee players who can have an impact from the start.

He has urged the club to break the bank and spend £100 million on players who can help them fulfil their lofty ambitions. They can’t expect managers to take them to the top of English football without making significant investments.
