Noel Whelan has urged Tottenham Hotspur to make a move for Dusan Vlahovic, as an alternative for Harry Kane.
Speaking to Football Insider, Noel Whelan has recently opined on Tottenham Hotspur’s situation in the attacking department. The former striker believes that the club needs to sign an alternative for the struggling Harry Kane and Dusan Vlahovic fits the bill perfectly.
Whelan’s comments were essentially a reaction to recent reports that link the Fiorentina forward with a move to Tottenham. It appears Nuno Espirito Santo and managerial director Fabio Paratici have identified the Serbian as a long-term replacement for Kane, thanks to his stellar record in Serie A.
Formerly of Partizan, Vlahovic made his breakthrough in the Italian top flight last season, scoring 21 goals. He has continued his run in the new campaign, netting four goals in seven matches so far.
The 21-year-old’s performances have left Whelan impressed, with the 46-year-old claiming in a recent interview that the Fiorentina forward could be a good investment for Spurs while pointing out the struggles of Kane in these early parts of the campaign.
“They need to strength in depth in that position. I don’t think it’s been any secret. They’ve had people in on loan, it has not worked out. They have gone back and Harry Kane has been your main man. He will be your main man but you need options,” Whelan told Football Insider when asked about the club’s current situation in the goalscoring department.
Kane has indeed had a miserable start to the campaign, failing to find the back of the net in any of his six matches in the Premier League this season. As such, Whelan believes Spurs need an alternative sooner rather than later and Vlahovic, with his imposing frame, could be useful.
“One thing they don’t have as an option is a target man at Tottenham. Someone that commands that presence up top, can bring players in from wide areas with a different kind of strength.
“At six foot three, he’s a big player that from wide areas you can get crosses in to. You’ve got some great wingers at Tottenham. Maybe they haven’t got the height that you would want in the box,” said Whelan.
“He’d be a different kind of player to Harry Kane and I think sometimes you need that option. His goal record speaks for itself. Whether he can do it over here in England straight away, that remains to be seen. But there’s no doubt his pedigree says that he’s a good player. He knows where the back of the net is,” he added.
Vlahovic, though, isn’t the only option for Tottenham in their search for a new striker. In a shocking revelation, the Lilywhites are in the market for former Chelsea star Alvaro Morata, as a potential replacement for Kane, as the Spaniard does have close ties to Fabio Paratici due to their time together at Juventus.
