Toni Kroos says he won’t be surprised if Real Madrid signed Kylian Mbappe

Toni Kroos has confessed that he will not be surprised in the slightest if Kylian Mbappe ended up joining Real Madrid at any point in his career.

In an interview with Sport Bild, Toni Kroos was asked to comment on Kylian Mbappe’s repeated links with Real Madrid. And Los Blancos’ star midfielder has said that will not be surprised if the French international joins the Spanish giants in the future while remaining coy over making any speculation.

Mbappe has indeed been linked quite heavily with Real Madrid, pretty much since his breakout at AS Monaco nearly half a decade ago. Since then, the Merengues have even had to make an official statement to deny being in pursuit of the French prodigy, who has been with Paris Saint-Germain since leaving Monaco.

Mbappe’s staggering rise to superstardom makes the interest from Real Madrid invariable, with the Spanish giants reportedly seeing the 22-year-old as the priority option to bolster their attack in the long term. However, an eye-watering price tag is hindering Real Madrid from making a move for Mbappe at a time when their finances have been hit adversely by the coronavirus pandemic.

Indeed, Los Blancos have made just one signing in the summer transfer window in the form of David Alaba, who has arrived on a free transfer. While they continue to be linked with a number of players to reinforce several positions, there has been very little actual movement in the market.

Mbappe remains a target this summer as well, although, as things stand, it appears unlikely that they will be able to secure the services of the French international. Nevertheless, the speculation is unending, and Toni Kroos was popped the inevitable Mbappe question in the interview with Sport Bild.

The Real Madrid midfielder said to that end, “I prefer to talk about signings that have already been completed, but since Real Madrid always want the best, I would not be surprised. Next to him, [Erling] Haaland is definitely the most interesting player on the market, and therefore [would] not exactly [be] cheap.

“We must not forget that we are in a period where there’s not an endless flow of money and, at the same time, we are completing our stadium, [which] is not free either.”

Whether Mbappe ends up joining Real Madrid or not is something that remains to be seen. As things stand, Real Madrid do need to make some important additions to their first-team squad, with or without Mbappe if they are to challenge Atletico Madrid for the La Liga title.
