Teddy Sheringham urges Harry Kane to leave Tottenham

Former Manchester United forward Teddy Sheringham has called on Harry Kane to leave Tottenham in the summer transfer window.

Speaking on Monday Night Football (h/t Daily Mail), former Manchester United and Tottenham forward Teddy Sheringham urged Spurs ace Harry Kane to leave the club and seek an opportunity to win trophies elsewhere.

The England captain came through the ranks at Hotspur Way and is amongst the best strikers in world football. A consistent scorer over the years, the 28-year-old has carved out a real niche for himself in the modern game.

Kane overtook Thierry Henry in the Premier League all-time goalscorers list thanks to his well-taken brace against Everton on Monday. While he has secured several personal accolades, a major team trophy has so far eluded him. The closest Kane came was in the 2019 UEFA Champions League final with Tottenham and the UEFA Euro 2020 showpiece event with England.

The Spurs talisman will certainly go down as one of the best players to ever play in the Premier League. However, the sheen will be lacking should he end his career with no major titles. At 28, Kane is in his prime and faces a major crossroads moment in his career.

Sheringham, a former Tottenham forward, is well aware of the club’s inability to contend for major honours. The ex-Manchester United forward believes Kane should make the most of his career and look to move elsewhere where he has a better shot at success.

“Short career, you get probably 12-14 years if you’re lucky,” Sheringham said. “He’s coming into a crossroads in his career of “what do I do, do I stay at a club which might challenge or do I go somewhere I know they’re going to challenge.”

A player of Kane’s ability should be featuring regularly for a side competing at the top of the footballing pyramid. Tottenham are currently experiencing a new dawn under Antonio Conte, but success is far from guaranteed. As things stand, Tottenham are miles away from playing in the Champions League, let alone challenge for it.

“If I was advising him, you want to play at the top level, you want to play in Champions League finals, you want to be playing for the league title,” continued Sheringham.

Sheringham’s stance comes from experience, given his success at Manchester United. The Englishman’s decision to swap White Hart Lane for Old Trafford was an inspired one as he raked in the trophies at the Theatre of Dreams.

The former English striker also had a threadbare trophy cabinet before moving to Manchester United. Despite being in his thirties while doing so, the four-year spell under Sir Alex Ferguson dramatically added to Sheringham’s trophy haul, adding to his legacy in the game. There is no reason why Kane cannot do the same.

“I think he needs to leave,” insisted the former Manchester United and Tottenham forward.

Clubs such as Manchester City are already at the top of the game and are also primed to challenge for years to come. City were keen on signing Kane last summer, but Tottenham held firm. Unfortunately, Spurs have been unable to provide the English striker with a squad that can challenge for titles. Manchester City remain interested and it is to be seen if Kane will finally call it quits at Tottenham.
