Teddy Sheringham backs Gareth Southgate to be Ruben Amorim successor at Manchester United

Manchester United icon Teddy Sheringham has insisted that Gareth Southgate will be a good choice to replace Ruben Amorim if they decide to change managers.

Ruben Amorim’s status as Manchester United’s manager for the future is an ongoing subject of discussion in the media. There is a majority that would like for another change of manager at Old Trafford, but there are factors that could potentially prevent that from happening at the moment.

Manchester United are staring at a £12 million payout should they sack Amorim, which may not suit the board at the moment. There have been instances when INOES have considered sacking the Portuguese boss owing to bad results, including the ones against Grimsby Town and Manchester City.

There are names like Andoni Iraola and Oliver Glasner that have been considered earlier when the pressure on Amorim was at its peak. Marco Silva is another name on their shortlist, but the club have not made a concrete decision on Amorim’s immediate future.

From a different perspective, Manchester United have had a summer of heavy investment in the squad as per Amorim’s specification. The style the Portuguese manager deploys is unique in its own way, and hence those players are seen as specialists of some sort for the current system.

Hence, there might be a reluctance on INEOS’s part to scrap the project and find a new manager, who, in theory, might want a new system in place. Now, the subject of Gareth Southgate was broached again by Manchester United icon Teddy Sheringham as a potential option to replace Amorim.

Sheringham’s comments on TEAMtalk appear to suggest that former England boss Southgate might be the ideal candidate in the present circumstances. The Manchester United icon believes Southgate has the experience to steady the ship for the present and even build towards the future.

Sheringham said, “I know that Manchester United fans didn’t want Gareth to come in after being the England manager for so long and the way his teams played, but for him to come in and steady the ship now and restructure the whole football club into how it should be, I think you could do a lot worse.”

“They’ve had so many managers who have not understood the club, and they have tried to take the club in a different direction, in their own manner. Manchester United is a global club, but obviously, the kingpin of English football, and I think Gareth Southgate would understand that, and he would take the club back to where it should be.”

“After being the manager of England for eight years, he would understand the pressure that comes with that as well, and I think he would be at an even better age now to take on that mantle.”

Sheringham might be right in that regard, as Southgate steadied the ship in the England camp, which was in disarray before he became the national team coach. While many sections do not like his style of play and the pragmatic approach he had for the Three Lions, for Manchester United, he might be the right choice at the moment.

Southgate was linked with the Manchester United job during Erik ten Hag’s time, specifically during the summer of 2024, when the club considered sacking the Dutchman. Moreover, INEOS chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe has good relations with the former England boss, which may make a case for what Sheringham is currently suggesting.
