Simon Rolfes hopeful Xabi Alonso will remain at Bayer Leverkusen amid Liverpool links

Bayer Leverkusen director Simon Rolfes is confident that Xabi Alonso will remain at the club beyond the ongoing season amidst Liverpool links.

The future of Xabi Alonso has been the talk of the town for a while now. The Bayer Leverkusen manager was linked with a move to Real Madrid last year. But those rumours have disappeared following Carlo Ancelotti’s contract extension. While Alonso is now linked with a move back to Liverpool, Simon Rolfes is confident he will stay in Germany beyond the summer.

A few weeks back, Jurgen Klopp made it known to the world that 2023/24 would be his final season as the manager of Liverpool. While the announcement surely came as a surprise to the world of football, Liverpool have already started planning for life without the German manager.

They are on the lookout for a new boss, and there are quite a few names on their radar. Xabi Alonso is one of their targets. The former Liverpool midfielder has been doing wonders for Leverkusen since taking charge. They are leading the race for the Bundesliga title and recently defeated Bayern Munich 3-0 in what was considered to be a virtual title decider by many.

Leverkusen have been unbeaten in all competitions this season and they have been playing an attractive brand of football. If Alonso manages to end Bayern’s dominance, it will be a great achievement considering the fact that it is still quite early in his managerial career.

His performances as a manager and the fact that he played for Liverpool back in the day are two major reasons why he has been linked with a move back. But, Bayer Leverkusen’s sporting director Simon Rolfes is quite confident that Alonso will stay in Germany.

When asked about Alonso’s future, Rolfes said via Sport1, “Yes I’m sure. One is contract constellations. The other thing is how comfortable he feels, the family, himself and that he knows what he has in the club. Also that he has a very good team, we will have a very good perspective next year and there is no change in the team.”

Rolfes is quite optimistic about the 42-year-old staying at the German club and he did give quite a few reasons for why he feels Alonso will stay. Firstly, he has a contract that runs until the summer of 2026. On top of that, the former Real Madrid midfielder and his family are quite comfortable in Leverkusen.

He has a good team at his disposal and knows that the club values what he has done so far. Moreover, the club will try to keep hold of the majority of its stars for next season. The feel-good factor along with the project should be enough to keep hold of Xabi Alonso.
