Manchester United have been told to make a move for Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez by club legend Rio Ferdinand before the transfer window closes.
Speaking on his FIVE YouTube channel, as quoted by the Daily Mail, former Manchester United defender and club legend Rio Ferdinand has urged the Red Devils to go after Atletico Madrid and Spain midfielder Saul Niguez this summer.
The 26-year-old Saul has spent his entire career at Atletico Madrid barring a loan spell early in his career. Having been a key part of Diego Simeone’s side over the years, the midfielder saw his importance in the team reduce in the past season. With the new arrival of Rodrigo De Paul, his position is further under threat.
Saul has been linked with an exit all summer long, with the likes of Liverpool, Barcelona all being linked with a move for the Spanish international. Manchester United, too, have been touted as an interested party in the 26-year-old’s services.
And former defender Ferdinand, who believes that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will make a move for another player this summer, has urged Manchester United to push for the signing of Saul.
“I think if the right player becomes available for the right price, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will go and get him. The problem is who is out there and who could be a good fit? Saul Niguez would be a perfect fit and he’s asking price was £160 million ($221m) a couple of years ago, now it’s more like £40-50m ($55-69m).
“In today’s game that’s a decent price for someone like him who has Champions League experience. I’m a big fan of his. If you can get him in this window, I think you do it,” he said.
Manchester United, as things stand, have a well-stocked midfield department. However, question marks continue to linger over the future of Paul Pogba, who is in the final year of his contract. With Nemanja Matic also not getting any younger, making a move for someone like Saul, who is adept at essaying multiple roles in the middle of the park would make sense.
However, having splashed in excess of £100 million already this summer for Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane, it remains to be seen if Manchester United are ready to pull out the chequebook for another major signing.
