Sander Berge tipped to join Manchester United

Football expert Lars Tjaernas thinks Manchester United would be a perfect fit for Norwegian midfielder Sander Berge.

There’s a big need for defensive midfielders in the English market, especially for top-rated clubs like Liverpool and Manchester United. The changing dynamics of the transfer market owing to PSR obligations have forced clubs to shift their priorities and let them consider players they otherwise would not consider.

Sander Berge is one such star. He has a good enough reputation in English circles following his performances for Sheffield United and last season with Burnley, but he has never looked closer to joining a big club until now. Of late, Liverpool have seen links to the Norwegian midfielder, as Arne Slot wants to add a defensive midfielder to his ranks.

Last summer, Liverpool made a bid of over 110 million for Moises Caicedo before Chelsea signed him, and may still have that money set aside. Whether Arne Slot is given access to those funds remains to be seen, as the links to Berge show, and he probably won’t have that level of money to spend in this window.

As the Liverpool links picked momentum, Manchester United were linked with Berge. The 26-year-old Championship midfielder appears to be an option INEOS might consider. The Red Devils are also keen on a defensive midfielder.

Norwegian outlet Viaplay’s expert Lars Tjaernas via Nettavisen insists Manchester United could be the perfect club for Sander Berge and the other way around for the Red Devils.

Lars Tjaernas said, “Manchester United need a central midfielder with the combination of mobility defensively, as well as overview and ability to pass opponents offensively. Berge needs a club and league at a higher level to develop, and I think the chance of playing a lot at United is great. It would have been fun and useful if the transition went smoothly.”

Berge brings a good level of physicality and height to any midfield, and such attributes are vastly appreciated at top clubs these days. As for Manchester United, they are already linked to low-cost options like Ben Sheaf, meaning they might be realistically looking at affordable options like Berge.

They have also cooled their interest in Manuel Ugarte owing to his price, as someone like Berge could be seen as a viable option. The Norwegian star may need a big chance to prove his worth on the big side, and it could have a similar effect to that of Nemanja Matic in the years before.
