Ruben Amorim reacts to Liverpool links with Goncalo Inacio

Ruben Amorim has not ruled out a move for Goncalo Inacio away from Sporting CP, with Liverpool supposedly interested in the defender.

Goncalo Inacio is still a name ringing around in the transfer market, as the defender could attract interest in the latter stages of this window. The 22-year-old defender was considered a significant target by many top clubs for the qualities he offers, as there were teams in search of a left-footed centre-half.

Liverpool were particularly interested early on, but Arnel Slot wanted to evaluate his squad rather closely and carefully before making transfer decisions. There are still some doubts about whether they will rush in for a new central defender despite the apparent need after Joel Matip’s departure.

Arne Slot has decent enough options to sustain the season, but he would probably think about adding one move player to his backline. Incidentally, Liverpool does not have a left-footed central defender in their ranks, which is significant considering how their rivals have multiple options in that profile.

Inacio remains a player on their list, with reports suggesting Liverpool could open initial talks with Sporting CP. The Portuguese side’s manager, Ruben Amorim, through his comments on O Jogo via Sport Witness, did not rule out a late move for the 22-year-old defender, as he is not worried about the outcome.

Amorim said, “A lot of news has already come out.”

“I don’t know if there have been negotiations. Inácio will play tomorrow. He’s ready. Whatever happens in the market…

“We already have some experience; we know that our players are very attractive for the market. Until it closes, everything is possible. No more or less worried about waiting for the market to close.”

Amorim will undoubtedly look to make the grade to the Premier League if a suitable offer arrives and join many of his international colleagues in England. He also has sights on the national team berth left vacant by Pepe’s retirement, which he will want to make his own. Hence, a move to a club like Liverpool would make so much sense for his career, as he also has the chance to replace Virgil van Dijk in the long term future.

As for Liverpool’s transfer activities, it has been a slow burner of a window for the Merseysiders. They suffered a blow when Martin Zubimendi rejected a move and chose to stay in Spain. They have since seen links to Giorgi Mamardashvilli, the Valencia goalkeeper, as some are excited and baffled in equal measures, but that is not a position in which they particularly need reinforcements at this moment.
