Swansea attacker Ronald Martins has lofty ambitions for the future as he revealed his dream clubs, although he remains focused on the season ahead.
Players coming in from South America most certainly dream of playing either for Real Madrid or Barcelona, as English sides usually do not get that level of preference as being favourites. Many players do dream of playing for P{remier League sides, while some resort to taking a different route altogether.
In the case of 23-year-old Brazilian winger Ronald Martins, the attacker took a rather unorthodox route of joining Swansea back in January. He became the Welsh side’s first-ever signing from Brazil, as he continues to show flashes of his talent with the promise that he can be a star of the future.
In his interview with Premier League Brazil, he insisted on having many offers from top Brazilian sides but took the opportunity to join the Championship side. He feels his talents are more suited to the style in England, although he too holds lofty ambitions to play for some of the biggest clubs in the world.
Martins said, “Look, every player certainly dreams of playing for the biggest clubs in the world: Real Madrid, Barcelona, Liverpool, Milan, etc. It would be a lie if I said I wouldn’t like that to happen one day. The same goes for the big Brazilian clubs. But today my focus is all on Swansea, which for me is already the biggest club I’ve played for in my career so far.”
When asked about his immediate future, the 23-year-old Brazilian winger insisted that he’s looking forward to the season with Swansea and hopes to help them bring them back to the top flight.
Martins continued, “Of course. All my focus is on Swansea and next season I hope to be able to contribute a lot so that we can gain access to the top flight of English football. The whole group has this goal in mind.”
In terms of performances, he had a modest start to life in England and with Swansea, scoring only three goals in 18 appearances since his move in January. While that lack of statistics could be attributed to any player coming to a new league far away from home, there will be lofty expectations for him to perform in the coming season.
While there’s no harm in dreaming of a move to clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona or Liverpool, Martins must show he has it in him to make the grade. Players coming from the Championship usually need exceptional performances to prove their worth. They may not have the exposure most Premier League stars have, meaning he could get his big chance if he helps Swansea to the top flight in the coming season.
