Real Madrid have received a massive boost in their pursuit of Ballon d’Or-winning Manchester City midfield star Rodri.
Rodri has often been linked with a move to Real Madrid. With Los Blancos on the lookout for a new holding midfielder, they could actually make a move for him this summer, and they have already received a massive boost following the comments of the Manchester City star on a potential move to the Spanish giants.
While speaking to Spanish radio station Onda Cero during the international break, he was asked about his future at Manchester City. Rodri said via Sky Sports, “I have a year left on my contract. There will come a point when we’ll have to sit down and talk.”
Rodri has struggled with injuries of late, and he has not been able to reach the levels he did during the Ballon d’Or-winning season. Despite that, he remains a key figure at Manchester City. With his contract running out in just over a year, City are keen on agreeing a new deal with the 29-year-old.
Real Madrid are keen on Rodri
Since the 29-year-old is yet to pen a new deal, he has been extensively linked with Real Madrid. The Spanish giants are always on the lookout for players who could further bolster their squad, and they would certainly love to have him in their ranks.
They have struggled to control the tempo of games since the departure of Toni Kroos and Luka Modric, and bringing in someone like Rodri will certainly help. The Manchester City midfielder seems interested in a move to the Spanish capital.
When asked about reports that suggest Florentino Perez wants him at Real Madrid, Rodri said, “I don’t know. They don’t speak to me about that. They speak to my agent.”
Rodri is open to a move to Real Madrid
Rodri was a part of the Atletico Madrid youth setup, and he even played a season for their first team before joining City. As a result, the Spaniard was asked whether he would be open to joining a rival club.
The Ballon d’Or winner replied, “There are other players who’ve taken that path. Not directly, but over time. You can’t turn down the best clubs in the world. I would like to return (to LaLiga) yes, of course. For me, LaLiga is where I started. I still follow it, not as much as before, but I still follow it. But right now, I am very happy here (in the Premier League).
While Rodri did insist that he is happy in the Premier League, he did open the doors to a potential move to Real Madrid. If Manchester City fail to secure his future with a new deal before the summer, they will have to seriously consider offers for the 29-year-old.
The upcoming summer transfer window could be the final opportunity to make a significant fee from his departure, and they certainly won’t want to lose one of their best players for free in a season’s time.
