Ralf Rangnick claims Manchester United said no to Luis Diaz, Dusan Vlahovic, Julian Alvarez

Ralf Rangnick has given a lowdown of what transpired behind the scenes at Manchester United during the January transfer window.

Ralf Rangnick has revealed some interesting outcomes over transfer ideas presented to the club in the January transfer window. The German tactician oversaw an indifferent winter window, which left Manchester United short of options in the attack. Without signing anyone of significance, the interim manager was left with his existing squad, which has failed in the race for the top four.

The Mason Greenwood controversy and Anthony Martial’s loan move left Manchester United short in the attack. Rangnick has revealed that he tried to put forward the idea of buying a striker, suggesting the names of Liverpool forward Luis Diaz, Dusan Vlahovic and Manchester City’s incoming attacker Julian Alvarez.

As quoted by Sky Sports, Rangnick claimed the Manchester United board did not feel those players would improve the side. Instead, the management asked the German to focus on getting someone on loan during the window.

Rangnick said, “The answer at the time was no there was no player on the market that could really help us – there were a few, Diaz who is now at Liverpool, Alvarez who will be at Manchester City in the summer, Vlahovic, who at the time still was with Fiorentina those are just three of them that come across my mind now.”

“We had four days off at the time, and on Sunday I was informed about the issues with Mason Greenwood and obviously Anthony Martial had already left, and then I was aware that within four days, we had some strikers missing, and it might make sense, we were still in three competitions – Champions League, FA Cup and fourth in the league but that’s the past, and it doesn’t help us anymore.”

“I spoke to the board and said, shouldn’t we at least speak and try and analyse if we could get a player either on loan or as a permanent deal but in the end the answer was no. I still believe that we should have at least tried, if we would’ve found and been able in 48 hours, 48 hours is short notice but it’s still 48 hours, it might have been worth to try and internally discuss but we didn’t and it was not done.”

Buying one of those players would have drastically improved Manchester United’s chances of finishing in the top four. Barring Alvarez, who is yet to arrive at Manchester City, Diaz and Vlahovic have done pretty well at Liverpool and Juventus, respectively, since getting their moves in the previous window.

Erik ten Hag is expected to embark on a big transfer window in the summer. Manchester United will look to sign a new striker, and a high profile centre-forward could arrive at the club among players in other positions.
