Manchester United recently sacked Ruben Amorim after a disappointing run of results, and former Arsenal star Paul Merson has now sent out a warning to them.
Paul Merson believes that Manchester United have been chopping and changing quite frequently, and they cannot keep sacking managers if they want to build a successful project. He has urged them to abandon their former delusions that they can win the Premier League by making frequent changes, and to build a sustainable project and climb back to the top of English football with patience and planning.
He said on Sky Sports, “This is not last year and two years, and three years. We’re talking 20 years now. Man Utd. You know, it’s not like five years ago, six years ago. It’s constant. We still live in this thing of Man Utd of like a Cristiano Ronaldo at his pomp and Roy Keane and Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic and Paul Scholes and Wayne Rooney.”
“That’s gone. It’s gone. It’s gone a long time ago. Start now and just try and get back to a little bit. They think now because it’s Man Utd, they are going to just fly up and win the Premier League. It’s got to be done slowly, but they got to get things right. Can’t keep on sacking managers.”
Can Manchester United find a quality manager?
It will be interesting to see if Manchester United can bring in a quality manager in the coming weeks. Former Scottish international Darren Fletcher is currently the caretaker boss. Manchester United have a set of quality players at their disposal, but they also need a top-cass manager.
The Red Devils have spent a substantial amount of money on new players over the last few years, but they have not been able to bring in the quality needed to compete with elite clubs. They need to get their transfer decisions right and appoint a quality manager who can get the best out of the team. Recent reports have linked them with several candidates, including Thomas Tuchel.
Furthermore, they should give the new manager time to build a team, rather than being trigger-happy. Manchester United are indeed one of the biggest clubs in the world, but they are going through a rough patch for several years now. INEOS will have to be more meticulous in their planning and more patient in their approach if they want to get Manchester United back to the top of English football once again.
