Paul Merson sympathises with Kai Havertz

Arsenal signed Kai Havertz from Chelsea this past summer, but the German international has not been able to hit top form yet.

According to Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson, Kai Havertz is playing in a position where it is not easy for him and fans will have to be patient with the player. Havertz has looked short of confidence and it remains to be seen whether he can get back to his best.

Merson told Sky Sports: “I feel for Kai Havertz. He’s playing in a position where it’s not easy. He hasn’t played very well. Mikel Arteta will stick with him. He’s low on confidence but Arsenal have won three and drawn one.”

“You’ve paid that money and put yourself out there to go and get him. The cream rises to the top. I’m a big fan but I did say when he got signed, he has got that look of Mesut Ozil about him. That’s the problem. If it isn’t going well, he doesn’t look too interested. That’s not the case – it just comes across like that.”

The move to the Premier League has not worked out as expected for the 24-year-old attacker. His numbers were quite underwhelming at Chelsea as well and things do not seem positive at Arsenal either.

The German international has been criticised heavily by the fans and pundits. Some have already levelled accusations that the player looks disinterested at the north London club. Merson believes that he has a similarity to the former Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil who had a disinterested look about him as well. However, that is simply not the case and both players were fully committed to the cause.

Havertz was regarded as a world-class talent during his time in the Bundesliga and he could develop into a top-class player for Arsenal in the coming seasons. Arsenal have £65 million for him and they will hope the 24-year-old can regain his sharpness and confidence.

Despite his underwhelming performances, Arsenal have done quite well this season having won three of their four league matches and drawing the other one. If they can get the best out of their summer signing, they are likely to improve further.

Havertz can operate in a number of positions and he could be an asset for Mikel Arteta. The Spanish manager has done well to get the best out of players like Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli since taking over. It remains to be seen whether he can unlock the true potential of the 24-year-old German as well.

Havertz can operate as a centre forward, a false nine, and an attacking midfielder as well as a wide player. He has the intelligence and technical attributes to make a significant difference in the final third for Arsenal. The player will look to make his mark at Arsenal in the coming months.
