Nico Gonzalez set for Barcelona contract talks

Barcelona midfielder Nico Gonzalez has opened up on his contract situation at Camp Nou, admitting that he would love to stay at the club all his life.

Speaking in an interview with La Vanguardia, Barcelona midfield prodigy Nico Gonzalez has insisted that he will soon sit down to negotiate a new contract with the club while admitting that he would love to spend his entire career at Camp Nou.

Nico Gonzalez is a product of Barcelona’s famed La Masia youth setup. The Spanish prospect made his first-team breakthrough under Ronald Koeman in the ongoing season and has made huge strides over the past eight months, racking up 24 appearances in La Liga.

Nico has had to contend with competition from Frenkie de Jong, Pedri, Gavi and Sergio Busquets, which has somewhat restricted his playing time. But, the 20-year-old has shown his quality and potential every time he has stepped onto the pitch, indicating that he will be an important player for Barcelona for the years to come.

Nico Gonzalez had signed a new contract with Barcelona only last year, extending his stay at the club until the summer of 2024. However, he has now confirmed that talks over a new deal will take place soon enough as he looks to prolong his stint with his boyhood club.

“Soon, we will have to sit down and speak,” Nico Gonzalez said. “It will be an important moment for my future. If Barcelona want, I would stay here for my whole life.”

The midfielder admitted that he has not played as regularly as he would have liked but insisted that it is all about making the best of whatever opportunities come his way and doing what is best for the team.

“It is true that now I am playing less, but the first thing is the team, and I also think that the competition is positive, it makes you raise your level. I have been in the first team for a few months, and I have to be patient, work and take advantage of the minutes I have,” the midfielder said.

While things may go smooth for Barcelona with regard to a renewal for Nico, they are on thin ice with the contract situations of fellow prospects Gavi and Ronald Araujo. The pair will see their contracts expire in 2023, and talks over new deals have hit a roadblock, with clubs from the Premier League circling to swoop in.
