Michael Brown slams Erik ten Hag for Scott McTominay treatment after Napoli move

Scottish midfielder Scott McTominay joined Serie A outfit Napoli from Manchester United in the dying hours of the deadline day.

Scott McTominay will look to get his career back on track with regular football after joining Napoli from Manchester United. Former Tottenham and Manchester City midfielder Michael Brown believes that the 27-year-old was not treated right at Old Trafford by Erik ten Hag.

The Scottish international struggled for regular game time at Manchester United, and he never quite managed to establish himself as an indispensable asset under Erik ten Hag. Brown believes that the Manchester United manager should have treated the player better and given him more opportunities and an integral role in the side.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag reacted to McTominay’s departure on deadline day and revealed that the sale was motivated by the club’s desire to comply with the financial regulations.

Meanwhile, Brown said on BBC, “I think Erik ten Hag was talking a load of rubbish when he said he was disappointed at Scott McTominay’s departure. McTominay has given everything to Manchester United and whenever there has been a chance to leave him out, Ten Hag has. He keeps getting treated like the homegrown player rather than the player he is. The manager has not treated him right. I get certain other players have to play at times – but McTominay has not been treated right.”

Manchester United needed to balance the books

Manchester United have spent substantial amounts of money this summer, and they have brought in a number of quality signings. It will be interesting to see if the new players can hit the ground running and help Manchester United compete for major trophies. A club of their stature should be competing at the highest level regularly, and they will be expected to secure Champions League qualification as well.

The Red Devils have plugged most of their weaknesses during the summer transfer window, and the fans will be expecting a successful season this time around. Meanwhile, McTominay will look to establish himself as a key player for Antonio Conte at Napoli, and it remains to be seen whether he can adapt to Italian football quickly. He was an important player for Manchester United and he has the qualities to thrive in Serie A as well.
