Barcelona sporting director Mateu Alemany has insisted that the Catalan giants do not have an agreement to sign Robert Lewandowski.

Speaking ahead of Barcelona’s defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday, as quoted by Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Mateu Alemany refused to give anything away when asked about questions surrounding Robert Lewandowski, reportedly a target for the Blaugrana.

Robert Lewandowski has enjoyed a legendary career since joining Bayern Munich from Borussia Dortmund nearly eight years ago. The Polish striker was already a prolific goalscorer during his stint with the Black and Yellows but has taken his game up several notches in his spell with the Bundesliga champions.

The 33-year-old has stamped his authority again this season, amassing 47 goals and four assists in 41 appearances across all competitions thus far. But Lewandowski’s future at Bayern Munich is not set in stone, with his contract expiring in a little over a year. Such a situation has captured the attention of Barcelona.

The interest from Barcelona stems from the rising uncertainties surrounding the futures of Martin Braithwaite and Luuk de Jong. The duo will likely depart from Camp Nou in the summer, leaving Xavi Hernandez with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as the only natural striker at his disposal.

Lewandowski is thus a viable target for Barcelona, although Bayern Munich CEO Oliver Kahn has insisted recently that the Pole is going nowhere in the summer. And now, Barcelona sporting director Mateu Alemany has responded to speculation linking Lewandowski with the Blaugrana.

“We deeply respect him, he is a very important player for his club. We are in the field of journalistic speculation, which is logical. But I already told you that we do not have an agreement with absolutely anyone. If one day we are interested in a footballer, we will talk to his club.”

“We will have to complete the squad, I think very soon. We are analyzing, we are in the market. Logically, our obligation is to be very attentive to everything that happens, and more so in our economic situation. Right now, we are focused on finishing the season as best as possible.”

Recent reports had indicated that Lewandowski has agreed a deal in principle with Barcelona, but that does not seem to be the case. And following Kahn’s confident comments, it will not be surprising to see Lewandowski remain at Bayern Munich even if the two parties have not reached a consensus over a renewal.
