Ashley Young has recommended Manchester United to sign Paris Saint-Germain star Marco Verratti to solve their midfield problems.

Speaking to BBC 5 Live, Ashley Young has urged Manchester United to sign Marco Verratti. The current Aston Villa veteran believes that the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder has what it takes to solve the club’s problem in the midfield department.

Young’s comments come just a few days after Verratti’s heroic performance for PSG, in the club’s 2-0 win over Manchester City. The Italian was one of the best performers in the game, producing an excellent all-round display that not only kept the opposition at bay but also provided his team with stability in the middle of the park.

Verratti’s performance raised a lot of eyebrows across Europe, with now Ashley Young getting in on the act. The Englishman, who had spent one and a half year at Inter Milan before joining Aston Villa this summer, has tipped the Italian international to be an ideal answer to the club’s immediate need for a new quality midfielder.

Tribal Football has recently published excerpts of his interview with BBC 5 Live, where the 36-year-old also opined on United’s current crop of midfielders including Scott McTominay and Fred.

“The Michael Carrick type has been missing for years. They haven’t gone out and replaced Michael Carrick. Don’t get me wrong – Fred and McTominay are good players but I don’t think there’s a Michael Carrick around,” he said.

Formerly a part of the Manchester United side for almost nine years, Young had played with Carrick for a total of seven years before the latter eventually retired at the end of the 2017/18 campaign. The duo had won a Premier League title, an FA, a Europa League and a League Cup title during their time together at Old Trafford.

Young then went on to suggest Verratti as an ideal Carrick replacement for Manchester United. “I was watching the PSG v City game yesterday and I think Marco Verratti is the closest one and nobody’s gone out to test the water to try to sign him. I think he would be an unbelievable signing for Manchester United,” he told BBC.

Manchester United being urged to sign Verratti is a sentiment shared by many fans across the world. The PSG midfielder, though, hasn’t been seriously linked with a move to England in recent years and he also has a long-term contract in Paris, so it appears that he will move anywhere anytime soon.
