Kevin Phillips urged Manchester United to accept any forthcoming offers for goalkeeper Dean Henderson in the January window.
Dean Henderson looks lost in the battle for the no.1 spot at Manchester United despite finishing the previous season as the first choice keeper under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The Englishman made 26 appearances across all competitions as David de Gea struggled with form and personal issues.
The tide has turned in de Gea’s favour this season, with the Spaniard seemingly back to his best form in the last few years. He has given Henderson no chance whatsoever to reclaim the no.1 spot in either the Premier League or Champions League.
Henderson made a solitary start as Manchester United were knocked out by West Ham United from the EFL Cup. Despite the club going through a tough period, losing their last three games out of four in the Premier League, de Gea has still been in inspirational form, which has led Henderson to evaluate his future at the club.
Some clubs are interested in signing the keeper off Manchester United’s books. With Newcastle United primed to make big signings in January, Henderson has emerged onto their list of potential targets for January. According to emerging reports, the club could sanction a loan move, as they still see a future for the 24-year-old.
Kevin Phillips evaluates the keeper’s situation and believes Manchester United should let him play regularly somewhere. Speaking to Football Insider, the former striker urged the Red Devils to accept any reasonable offer for Henderson.
Phillips said, “It is unfortunate for Henderson. We all know that David de Gea is a world-class goalkeeper. He has had a couple of bad seasons, but now he is back to his best. He has risen to the top again. Some of the saves he made against Man City were phenomenal.
“I understand why Henderson wants to leave. He is frustrated. He wants to play football, and I give him credit for that. If he wants to get out there and play football you have to respect that. I hope United do the right thing and let him go.”
When the Premier League action resumes at the weekend, Manchester United take on Watford to arrest their recent slump in form. De Gea will be expected to feature for Solskjaer’s team on the goalkeeping front, while Henderson will remain the second choice and on the substitutes bench.
