A contentious penalty decision by the referee irked the Manchester United fans, as Arsenal managed to steal a late draw at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils had dominated most of the game and taken a well deserved lead through Juan Mata in the 68th minute. But French striker Olivier Giroud struck with the Gunners only shot on target to deny United in the 89th minute.
It could have all been very different if referee Andre Mariner had given a very close penalty call in the first half though. Antonio Valencia was brought down by a falling Nacho Monreal, but Mariner waved away the appeals from United players for a penalty.
After the game Man United fans took to twitter to sarcastically applaud Mariner, naming him Arsenal’s Man of the Match.
Andre Mariner is Arsenal’s man of the match. Well done.

Good game by Arsenal’s 12th man, Andre Mariner. Very well played mate.

Without doubt Andre Mariner has been Arsenal’s best defender today#MUFC

Seems like Andre Mariner is the only Arsenal player to turn up today at Old Trafford #MUFCvAFC

Andre Mariner ref. Expecting at least three fuckups

Andre Marriner has been diabolical. Clear, stonewall penalty in the first half. Arsenal didn’t deserve a point at all. United played well.

by the law, thats a stonewall penalty and possibly yellow for Monreal. #Mariner bottled it up. @andrewmuchina

I am still laughing even now how Andre mariner failed to award a penalty to man utd.. did he think Monreal is the #flash?

That wasn’t poor refereeing by Andre Mariner. That was just plain cowardice. Much less media attention if you don’t give a penalty #MUNARS

Andre Mariner. First gives Darmian a yellow for a Walcott dive, then doesn’t give one for a clear foul and then doesn’t give a clear penalty

That was a penalty all day long! Shocking decision #ManUArs #mariner
— Thomas O’Connell (@tomthebaggie) November 19, 2016
Clear penalty! If it was City or L’pool Mariner would’ve given it. Bollocks! #MUvsARS

Mariner being small timer, will follow his hero Clattenburg and get himself a new tattoo “Denied a penalty to Utd at OT lol”.. Piles

United should have had a penalty, but have only themselves to blame. As with Stoke, fell asleep under no real pressure.
