A hat-trick from Sergio Aguero condemned Arsenal to a 3-1 defeat against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Just a minute after kick-off, Manchester City capitalized on some sloppy play by Arsenal, with Aguero heading home Aymeric Laporte’s cross from close range. Captain Laurent Koscielny reinstated parity ten minutes later, heading home from a set-piece situation.

Aguero made it 2-1 in favour of the reigning Premier League champions on the verge of half-time, before adding his third goal of the game a little after the hour mark to put the result beyond a doubt. The result meant Manchester City closed down the gap to leaders Liverpool to just two points, with the Reds scheduled to play West Ham United on Monday.

Arsenal, who started the matchweek in fourth place, find themselves down in the sixth spot now, with both Chelsea and Manchester United registering victories in their respective matches against Huddersfield Town and Leicester City. Alex Iwobi drew a lot of ire from the Arsenal fans, after his mistake led to City’s opening goal. The Nigerian tried to dribble his way out in a dangerous position, only to see the ball being taken off him, before Laporte and Aguero did the rest. And supporters weren’t happy with the academy man, with many demanding that he be sold;
