Luis Suarez Miramontes has blasted Luuk de Jong, questioning why he was signed by Barcelona following a dreadful midweek performance.
Speaking to Carrusel Deportivo, as quoted by Spanish publication SPORT, Luis Suarez Miramontes has not appeared to be in the best of moods following Barcelona’s big defeat to Benfica this week. The Barcelona legend has slammed Luuk de Jong in particular, appearing to insinuate that he does not belong at the club.
Luuk de Jong was a deadline day signing in what was an underwhelming summer transfer window for Barcelona. Following the departures of Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann, the Blaugrana were plunged into chaos and were forced to make a knee-jerk move for a striker, finally zeroing in on de Jong.
The Dutch international has joined Barcelona on loan from Sevilla for the remainder of the 2021/22 season. However, his arrival has come with a bucketload of skepticism, which is not too unfounded considering he has hardly ever been prolific in his career.
Now, Luis Suarez Miramontes has come out questioning the signing of the 31-year-old. Speaking to Carrusel Deportivo (h/t SPORT), the Barcelona legend said, “This de Jong, I don’t know who the hell recommended him. The worst game I’ve ever seen in my life, so bad.”
Luuk de Jong has indeed been a poor signing so far, scoring just one goal in five games so far. That solitary goal came in a decent enough performance against Levante last weekend. However, that has been the only positive performance by the experienced Dutch striker so far at Barcelona.
Earlier this week, de Jong was dreadful in Barcelona’s 3-0 loss to Benfica in the UEFA Champions League. The 31-year-old barely managed to get himself into the game while producing a shocking miss from point-blank range in a rare chance for the Blaugrana.
Only time will tell whether de Jong can turn things around and prove to be a shrewd acquisition for Barcelona. For now, though, the Dutchman appears to be a player who adds nothing to the first-team setup at Camp Nou, is not a clinical finisher and in turn not a prolific customer in front of goal.
