Luis Diaz comments on Liverpool future amid Barcelona links

Luis Diaz indicated that he is ‘very happy’ to stay at Liverpool as he responded to persistent links about his future at the club.

Luis Diaz, like some of the top South American stars, remains focused on his task with his national team ahead of the Copa America to be held in the USA. The 27-year-old is expected to star for Colombia during this continental tournament, although questions about his club’s future still need to be answered.

Diaz came in for plenty of criticism for his performances towards the end of the previous campaign as Liverpool tanked a title challenge, leaving the charge led by them, Arsenal and Manchester City for the prize. There were some abject displays from the team, and like everyone else, the Colombian did receive his share of the scrutiny.

However, even before the season ended, there were persistent rumours about leaving Liverpool. The 27-year-old’s father made some loud comments about wanting to play for one of the top two clubs of La Liga, which firmly pointed towards a move to either Real Madrid or Barcelona.

Barcelona did hold an interest and was considered a frontrunner should Diaz leave Liverpool in the close season. However, there are financial aspects at the Catalan club to consider before strongly linking any player of a specific quality with a move to Camp Nou.

While new boss Hansi Flick reportedly wants him, Barcelona’s current state of finances will not allow them to spend what Liverpool would wish to for Diaz. Hence, any move to Barcelona was always a doubt, and Real Madrid, having recently acquired the signature of Kylian Mbappe, was always unlikely to spend big on another winger, especially the 27-year-old.

Now, while on Colombia duty, Diaz was asked the questions about his future at Liverpool. The winger, via his comments on Noticias Caracol, responded by suggesting he’s ‘very happy at Liverpool and insists on the happiness of playing at Anfield.

Diaz said, “I am very happy there in Liverpool, it is a great team and club, I always wanted to play there, so I am very happy and calm. I’m not thinking about anything else, I’m thinking about the Colombian National Team, which is where we are,”

On the flip side, Diaz’s performances at the start of the season and in the second part of the campaign have invoked a mixed reaction from the Liverpool fan base. Some sections want him to be sold in the summer, while others feel he could still shine. As of now, he has a contract that gives the Merseysiders the power in negotiations, and while he wants to stay, the club might consider sizeable offers if they arrive.
