Don Hutchison urged Liverpool to make a dash for Victor Osimhen instead of spending on Newcastle Untied’s Anthony Gordon.
Liverpool have yet to enter the transfer market for top reinforcements, although they are expected to make a dash in the window to bring in key additions. The Reds are in the market for some key additions, but so far, some of their fans are baffled by their lack of activity.
Arne Slot has taken his time to evaluate the present squad, and while some argue that he has taken longer than needed, the Dutchman might be ready to knock on the door upstairs to get new players. Liverpool are looking to reinforce their attack, although they are not planning on a new striker on priority.
Darwin Nunez has the quality but endured plenty of criticism for missing a host of chances for Liverpool last season. They are keen to strengthen their wide attacking areas, with a left winger one of their priorities this summer. Anthony Gordon remains linked, with Newcastle United set to request a significant fee.
While the England international does move the needle for Liverpool in the attack, the Merseysiders already have a big player in Luis Diaz. Don Hutchison cites the same and insisted on TBR via ESPN that the club should instead prioritise spending big on Victor Osimhen over Gordon.
Hutchison said, “You would be better off putting £100 million towards Osimhen. £50 million for Gordon doesn’t really because of the players that Liverpool have got,” Hutchison said.
“They have got enough cover. They have a lot of players in wide areas, but what they lack, as we saw towards the end of the season, is that Darwin Nunez was inconsistent.
“If you are going to spend that little bit more and try and get the number one spot, push the boat out a little bit if you sell Gomez for £30, £40 million, you can make the difference up.”
Osimhen is a hot topic in the market and could be in for a late frenzy as he seeks a move out of Napoli in this window. In line with what Hutchison said, it’s a solid idea to spend big on the Nigerian, but there will be questions about whether they actually need them.
There’s plenty of interest in the Nigerian, with Chelsea currently in talks, while Napoli’s asking rate continues to hamper the progress in the player transfer. Napoli’s €130 million release clause is a significant issue, as they may not attract bids in that region, even from the biggest clubs.
On the Liverpool story, they might have that level of funds for a player who can be their game-changer. Last summer, they had set aside more than £110 million for Moises Caicedo and ended up using only a fraction of that money on the signing of Endo. Hence, they could revisit those coffers and make a dash for the Nigerian striker, who may dramatically improve their goalscoring ranks.
