Liverpool urged to sign Emile Smith Rowe instead of Jarrod Bowen

Kevin Phillips recommends Liverpool sign Arsenal star Emile Smith Rowe instead of Jarrod Bowen, despite the playmaker’s recent new deal.

The transfer window is up and running in full swing, with deals being thrashed out across Europe. Clubs are busy identifying preferred targets and are hopeful of closing a few transfers quickly with the new season approaching fast. With the market in general depressed due to the pandemic, some deals are taking longer than usual.

Then there’s also the opinions from experts who analyse each club’s need in the window. One such piece of advice comes from former Sunderland striker and only English player to ever win the European Golden Shoe, Kevin Phillips, who wants Liverpool to sign a certain young star from Arsenal.

Liverpool have been looking at young, wide players to fill their attacking ranks, with current stars Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri reportedly set to leave the club. The Reds have been keeping tabs on Jarrod Bowen with a possible transfer in mind. West Ham are unlikely to let go of the player so quickly, and Phillips has a solution in mind instead.

Phillips wants Liverpool to sign Arsenal’s Emile Smith Rowe as an alternative. The Gunners’ youngster signed a new long term contract just days ago, which also saw the club hand him the No.10 shirt. In what seems like a bizarre piece of advice, Phillips has suggested that the Reds try for the 20-year-old anyway.

On Football Insider, Phillips suggested Liverpool take a different approach to Bowen. He said, “He [Bowen] could be a good player for them. “It’s whether he will go there and play regularly for them. It could be another Shaqiri situation. I don’t want to see that. Bowen is thriving at West Ham; he’s found a team where he can play regularly.

“If Liverpool wants to sign a player like that, why don’t they go for someone like Emile Smith Rowe? He could be a very decent signing because I can’t see West Ham letting Bowen go. It’s clear Liverpool are looking for that kind of player, but I don’t see it happening.”

We don’t see Liverpool bothering Arsenal with an enquiry for Smith Rowe. It’s unclear how Jurgen Klopp rates the 20-year-old; Mikel Arteta sure does have a big opinion regarding his player. Arsenal handed him the new contract after rejecting sizeable bids from Aston Villa earlier, and there’s no reason to entertain Liverpool now.

On the other hand, Liverpool can still submit their offer to West Ham and test waters for Bowen. If a reasonable offer is to arrive, then the Hammers might even consider talking to the Reds. But Smith Rowe is out of bounds for Klopp’s side one way or another.
