Former Liverpool hero Robbie Fowler has urged the Reds to consider signing Tottenham Hotspur superstar and England captain Harry Kane in the summer.
Writing in his column for the Daily Mirror, Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has claimed that the Merseyside giants should explore the possibility of signing Tottenham Hotspur hitman Harry Kane in the summer window, even if it feels like a left-field choice.
Kane is one of the best strikers on the planet and has been dominating the goalscoring charts in the Premier League for years now. At the same time, the 28-year-old England captain has developed into a playmaker extraordinaire in recent years, with his ability to drop deep and stitch play together adding a whole new facet to the team’s gameplay.
Kane has seen a lot of individual success at Tottenham but has failed to win a single trophy in his career. It prompted him to consider leaving in the summer of last year, but a move to Manchester City fell through.
Heading into the summer transfer window of 2022, Kane again finds himself as a subject of transfer interest from several top clubs in Europe, with Real Madrid and Manchester United among those who are keen on him. The 28-year-old is on the agenda of the Cityzens as well, although they are leaning towards signing Erling Haaland.
And Fowler has now claimed that Liverpool should also throw their hat in the ring to sign the England captain, claiming that he can be a top-quality signing for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Talking about Kane’s situation at Tottenham, Fowler wrote, “I had a period where we were the nearly-men like Tottenham, were in the conversation, but always fell short to the serial winners of Manchester United and Arsenal. It hurt. And I won’t lie, I did think about leaving because I was sounded out by both clubs. Harry Kane is in the same position.
“He almost joined Manchester City, and I have no doubt the biggest clubs will be back in for him this summer. I’d be amazed if Erling Haaland doesn’t join City, so he won’t go there, but there will be others.”
The legendary striker then added that Liverpool should consider a swoop for Kane, saying, “United will be in, for sure, and this is a bit left-field, but I’ve said before that Liverpool could do worse than go for him because he’s got that ability to drop deep like Firmino, and he can guarantee goals.”
“So he has a question to ask: Are Spurs closer now to winning trophies? I think objectively, and without appearing to put them down, most people would say they’re further away than before.”
Liverpool had been sweating over the future of Mohamed Salah due to his contract situation. However, the Reds are closing in on an agreement with their talisman over a new deal. But with Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane also set to enter the final year of their respective contracts, Klopp could be forced to sign a new forward in the summer. Whether the German heeds Fowler’s advice and goes after Kane remains to be seen.
