Liverpool tipped to move for James Ward-Prowse in January

Kevin Campbell suggests Liverpool could sign James Ward-Prowse if their form tails off around the December period.

James Ward-Prowse was subject to transfer speculation during the summer window. Multiple Premier League sides were credited with interest during the period, although the midfielder ended doubts over his future by committing to a new long-term deal at Southampton.

Aston Villa saw a £25 million bid rejected at the peak of their spending spree in the window, and Liverpool, among other clubs, showed interest in signing the 26-year-old. As tempting a move to Merseyside could be, Jurgen Klopp’s side never made a concrete offer for the midfielder.

There were intense calls to sign a new midfielder to replace Gini Wijnaldum, who departed for PSG on a free transfer. While Klopp might have been considering bringing someone in, his options were boosted by the return to fitness of Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The main reason for abandoning a midfielder signing could also be the early season form of youngster Harvey Elliott, who received widespread praise for his performances.

Central defender Ibrahima Konate was their only signing in the window after excessive problems in that area last season due to multiple long term injuries to first-choice stars. However, if Liverpool faces a similar crisis this season, their stance over transfers could change in January.

Former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell has no complaints about Liverpool’s lack of signings despite rivals strengthening considerably. However, he believes Klopp might consider someone like Ward-Prowse in the winter window, especially if their form tails off by December.

Speaking to Football Insider, Campbell praised the Southampton midfielder and tipped him to be a star at Liverpool if the Merseysiders signed him.

Campbell said, “If Liverpool at struggling around the Christmas period, I think that is a signing they may look at in January. Ward-Prowse is a brilliant player, and I can see him at Liverpool. What I like about him is that there is no hullabaloo. He goes out there, does his job and is always fit. If they are struggling in that midfielder I think he is a player they would look at.”

With all his experience in the Premier League, Ward-Prowse would certainly be a valuable addition for Liverpool, although he might not come cheap. While the Reds have signed many Southampton players in recent years, the 26-year-old will be an expensive proposition given he only signed a new contract this summer.
