Liverpool suffer narrow loss to Southampton in first leg of EFL Cup semi-finals [Best Tweets]

Liverpool succumbed to defeat against Southampton in their League Cup semi-final first leg and the Kop placed some of the blame on their ‘Toxic Thunder’ playing kit.

A Nathan Redmond goal was enough to give the Saints an uplifting win over the Reds at home at the St Mary’s Stadium. It was a poor performance by Liverpool, who failed to show much of the verve and fight that has set them apart this season.

The 1-0 defeat is only their third loss in all competitions this season, and the Anfield faithful were understandably frustrated at a poor showing by their team. Some of them did point out that there were other factors behind the defeat though, primarily the absence of some key players from the starting XI.

The Kop also took to Twitter to blast the club’s florescent green third kit dubbed ‘Toxic Thunder’. All three of the Reds’ losses have come in the green kit, and many fans urged the club to get rid of it as soon as possible.

Liverpool and Southampton share a good business relationship, with several of the Reds’ best players having made a name for themselves with the Saints.

Southampton has even been dubbed the Liverpool academy because of the number of players going from St Mary’s to Anfield. After the loss on Wednesday, fans took quite a few digs at the fact that the Reds were losing to their ‘academy’.
