Liverpool left it late to clinch all three points against Tottenham, as Toby Alderweireld scored an own goal in the last minute to help the Reds return to the top of the table.

Tottenham began the game the stronger of the two sides, but Liverpool ended up grabbing the lead 16 minutes into the match. Andrew Robertson provided a sumptuous cross from the left flank, finding Roberto Firmino, who nodded the ball past Hugo Lloris to put the hosts ahead.

Liverpool subsequently retained control of the proceedings, but failed to build on their lead, as several chances went abegging heading into the break. In the second half, Tottenham took control of the game before being rewarded for the same, when Lucas Moura scored from close range to level the scores.

Thereafter, it was the visitors who looked likelier of the two sides to score the next goal, only for Spurs’ profligacy to hurt them. With the minutes ticking by, Liverpool got a stroke of luck going there way, as Hugo Lloris spilled a simple catch from Mohamed Salah’s header, before Toby Alderweireld diverted the ball into his own net.

The result meant Liverpool returned to the top of the table, leading Manchester City by two points, who have a game in hand. And, fans celebrated the outcome on Twitter wholeheartedly, sarcastically lauding Alderweireld as well.

A similar pattern as recent games ensued, as Virgil van Dijk defended resolutely, and fans made sure to hail the star defender.

Meanwhile, fans erred on the side of caution as well, pointing towards Jurgen Klopp’s decision making.
