Liverpool succumbed to a 2-1 defeat to Leeds United on Saturday, and Jurgen Klopp has made a damning statement.
Liverpool came into the game against Leeds United needing a victory after having lost out to Nottingham Forest in their previous league outing. However, the players failed to step up, and the Whites edged out a thrilling contest in the end. The German manager has now fired a warning to his squad.
A shocking defensive mistake from Joe Gomez allowed Leeds to take the lead four minutes into the game. And although Mohamed Salah gave them a way back with his strike in the 14th minute, Liverpool did not really perform at the required level and were deservedly beaten on the night.
Dutch winger Crysencio Summerville scored the winning goal of the game in the 89th minute to inflict further misery on Klopp and the Liverpool players.
The Premier League title race was already beyond them, and it seems like Liverpool could miss out on a top-four finish as well.

Speaking to the media after the game, Klopp also reflected on the same and said that the players will need to perform at a higher level or they could risk missing out on UEFA Champions League football next season.
The Liverpool boss said (h/t This is Anfield), “We cannot qualify for the Champions League if you play as inconsistent as we do at the moment. We have to fix that and we will see where we end up. We all know that a lot of things are possible, but for that, you have to win football games and we haven’t done that often enough yet.”
Having challenged for the quadruple last season, few would have expected Liverpool to perform the way they have done this season. It is evident that their form and confidence have fallen off a cliff, and it will be interesting to see if the players can turn it around during the second half of the season.
With the World Cup fast approaching, Liverpool have a much-needed break ahead of them. It will be interesting to see if the club hierarchy are prepared to back Klopp in the transfer market during the January transfer window so that he can freshen up his squad and re-launch a top-four assault.
Apart from their poor form, Liverpool have suffered from persistent injury problems this season, and a number of key players have been ruled out from time to time. Klopp will hope for better luck on the injury front during the second half of the campaign as he looks to get Liverpool back into the top four and into the Champions League next season.
