Johnny Cardoso is in no hurry to leave Real Betis ahead of the January window despite Totteham’s favourable clause that enables his transfer.
Tottenham are planning ahead of the January window to bring in new faces to the club. The performances so far this season have been a hit-and-miss, as there have been plenty of criticisms directed towards Ange Postecoglou for some of the bad results hundred during the campaign.
Spurs are keen to strengthen some key positions, including central midfield, especially a defensive player, as that has been somewhat of a problem area for Postecoglou. They do have decent options in Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr, but the manager only uses the former there, as he might look to add a new option.
One of the players linked with Spurs is Johnny Cardoso, the USMNT international who plays for Real Betis. Back in the summer, Tottenham sold Giovani Lo Celso to the Spanish side for a meagre fee, although they made a deal to sign Cardoso for a sum of €25 million in what seemed like a pre-agreed move.
Tottenham have done similar deals in the past, with the likes of Destiny Udogie arriving in a similar agreement from Udinese. They are now thinking about bringing Cardoso to north London and exploring the idea of striking the move earlier than they had agreed.
It is believed that Betis have only allowed Tottenham a vrief window next summer to sign Cardoso for the pre-agreed amount. Should they fail to come through, then they may have to re-negotiate terms with the La Liga side for the 23-year-old La Liga midfielder, who has a standing release clause worth €80 million on a contract that lasts until 2029.
In an interview with Estadio Deportivo, Cardoso was asked about a potential move away from Betis with links to Tottenham. The player insisted he was in no rush to leave the Spanish side, where he has been just under a year, having signed for them last January.
Cardoso said, “I don’t think about my future at all, because my future is at stake now. I am very happy here at Betis and I want to continue here, playing and helping the team in everything I can.”
Tottenham are indeed interested in Cardoso ahead of January, but given the nature of their agreement, Betis will not want to lose the midfielder earlier than expected. Spurs might explore a move, although they could face competition from the 23-year-old La Liga midfielder.
AC Milan are keen to sign him, with the Rossoneri eager to strengthen their squad. There are chances of Tijjani Reijnders to leave should a big offer arrive, although Spurs have the upper hand in the chase for Cardoso, owing to the agreement they already have in place with Betis.
