Former Everton defender John Heitinga has been approached by rivals Liverpool to be Arne Slot’s assistant at Anfield.
With Jurgen Klopp no longer at the club, a new era is all set to begin at Liverpool. They have already appointed Arne Slot as their next manager and are now working hard to ensure, the Dutch manager has everything needed to succeed at the club.
To add more quality to the Slot’s backroom staff, Liverpool are considering appointing John Heitinga as his assistant. The former Everton centre-back has confirmed that the Reds have approached him regarding a role at Anfield.
Heitinga while talking about his future said via De Telegraaf: “The only thing I can say now is that I have been approached and that my agent Rob Jansen and I are in talks.”
Heitinga’s coaching career
The 40-year-old began his coaching career at Ajax, he was a part of their setup from the start of 2016 to the summer of 2023. He managed different age group teams at the Dutch club and was the first team’s caretaker manager before parting ways last summer.
He ended up joining David Moyes at West Ham United as his assistant. His spell at the Hammers has already come to an end following the sacking of Moye. The former Dutch international is already on the lookout for another job and has confirmed that Liverpool have offered him a new role.
Will Heitinga join Liverpool?
The Reds want him to work with Slot as his assistant as they look to ensure they have things in place to maintain the levels reached under Klopp. They have approached him and are in talks with him as well as his agent Rob Jansen.
Heitinga and Slot seem to share the same coaching philosophies and it is one of the major reasons why they want to bring him to Anfield. While the 40-year-old is in talks with the Reds, it will be interesting to see if he does accept their offer given his history with Everton. He was a part of their first team for around five years which will make this decision a lot tougher for him.
