Joe Cole has reportedly urged Cole Palmer to resist the desire to leave Chelsea in the summer transfer window.
In an interview with TEAMtalk, Joe Cole discussed the possibility of Cole Palmer leaving Chelsea in the summer transfer window. The former Chelsea and Liverpool attacker has urged the 21-year-old to resist the temptation of departing Stamford Bridge after only one year at the West London club.
Cole said, “First of all, you have to credit Cole Palmer for taking the opportunity to leave Man City when he did and taking his chance at Chelsea. He could have looked at the way Phil Foden’s career has gone and followed that. He could have played 20 games a season for City and built it up from there, but Cole Palmer had a hunger to play football every week.”
“Of course, it was a step down to leave the Treble winners and join a club like Chelsea in a time of transition, but he’s taken the chance. He’s been extraordinary. He’s lit the place up and if I were in his shoes, I’d want to be the face of the rebirth of Chelsea Football Club as a global force.”
“I would stay, of course I would. Chelsea will get back to the top sooner rather than later. They have the finances and the desire to do that, so I’m sure it will happen and Palmer can be the leader of that.”
Cole Palmer has been a top-class addition to the Chelsea squad since arriving from Manchester City last summer. The transfer raised many eyebrows, as the West London club shelled out a considerable sum to sign an unproven player amid the need to land a prolific striker.
However, the 21-year-old has proven his naysayers wrong by becoming the most important player for Chelsea this season. Palmer has amassed 25 goals and 13 assists in 42 appearances across all competitions, with 20 Premier League strikes making him the joint-top scorer in the Golden Boot race.
Palmer’s exploits have meant that his market value has zoomed from €18 million to €55 million in less than 12 months. Interestingly, he came close to joining West Ham United before Chelsea swooped in. Meanwhile, several high-profile clubs have set their sights on the Englishman.
Almost every ‘Big Six’ club is keeping tabs on Palmer at Chelsea. However, Cole’s comments make sense, and with Chelsea showing some positive signs under Mauricio Pochettino, he can be the poster boy of the new era at Stamford Bridge.
