Jamie Carragher has urged Liverpool to tie Mohamed Salah down to a new contract, hailing the Egyptian international for his services.
During the Monday Night Football Show, Jamie Carragher has recently offered his thoughts on Mohamed Salah’s contract situation at Liverpool. The club legend has heaped praise on the attacker and believes that he should be offered a bumper new deal to stay at Anfield for the long term.
Liverpool have been a subject of criticism from fans for their lack of activity in the summer transfer window, having only signed Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig. But the Reds have done an extremely good job of renewing contracts of star players like Fabinho, Virgil van Dijk, Alisson, Andrew Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
But former defender Carragher believes that there is one player who is still yet to sign a contract and that is Mohamed Salah. In the Monday Night Football show, the Englishman, who had made over 500 Premier League appearances for Liverpool, has hailed the Egyptian’s impact at Liverpool, urging the club to renew his contract immediately.
“He is massively important and sometimes I feel sorry for Mo Salah because I think he goes under the radar in terms of Liverpool,” he told Monday Night Football, before continuing, “When people talk about Liverpool winning the league, they always go back to Liverpool signing Alisson and Virgil Van Dijk. Mo Salah came in six months before [van Dijk].”
“If he goes a few games without a goal you just think there is one coming because it is Mo Salah. That is just how it is,” Carragher added, talking about Salah’s productivity that has seen him score 128 goals in 207 competitive appearances for the Reds. He recently joined the 100 goal club in the Premier League by starring in Liverpool’s win over Leeds United.
“While Liverpool have not spent big this summer like other teams they have had a lot of players sign new contracts. The one that is yet to sign is Mo Salah,” said Carragher, before going on to urge Liverpool to meet the attacker’s wage demands.
“Now, he obviously wants a few quid. And rightly so. Good luck to him. He deserves it. He deserves to be one of the highest-paid players in the Premier League for what he has done since he came to Liverpool, he really does. You always debate about money, the player wants a bit more, the club wants a bit less, but that needs to be sorted. Fingers crossed it will because he deserves it for what he has done for Liverpool,” added the 43-year-old.
Carragher’s statement echoes the attitude of a majority of Liverpool fans, who want to see Salah play for Liverpool for many years. The Egyptian’s current deal at Anfield expires in 2023, so the Reds do have some time before they make a concrete decision over the player’s future at the club.
