Arne Slot has been shown the door by Liverpool recently after a disappointing season.
Liverpool finished fifth in the Premier League table despite spending nearly £500 million at the start of the season. The Netherlands manager was expected to push for major trophies once again, but Liverpool were hugely disappointing.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has now revealed that he was undecided on the manager and would have backed the decision to keep him at the club as well. He believes that an elite manager could have turned things around last season, but Slot failed to do so.
He also added that the manager failed to get the best out of the new players.
“I was torn on Arne Slot,” he said to Sky Sports. “I would have almost backed any decision, and I could see both sides of the argument, but it is a shock.
“I think an elite football manager, the absolute creme de la creme, probably finds a way of fixing Liverpool last season at some stage and making it better, but he wasn’t helped with recruitment.
“You look at those players, have any of them done well? There’s only (Hugo) Ekitike who’s played well, none of the others have done well. You could put that on the manager, does he need to get more out of them?
“Should those players have done more? A lot more, yes. Should the people above them have given them a better squad going into this season? Yes.
“There’s a lot of people to point the fingers at where Liverpool were last season, and also the players who were there the year before, a complete contrast in their performances.”
Liverpool are yet to bring in a quality replacement for the Dutch manager. They have been heavily linked with Andoni Iraola of Bournemouth. The 43-year-old Spanish manager did an excellent job at the English club, and he helped them finish in the top six. He also guided them to Europe for the upcoming campaign.
He will be looking to compete at a higher level now, and the move to Liverpool would be ideal. It remains to be seen whether all parties can come to an agreement quickly.
Meanwhile, Slot has been linked with the move to AC Milan.
