Jamie Carragher has expressed his concerns about Liverpool’s transfer model but insisted fans trust the model.
Speaking to Liverpool Echo, Jamie Carragher has recently opened on concerns relating to Liverpool’s activity in the market this summer. He has urged the club to invest more in a midfielder or an attacker but has insisted that fans trust the system that Jurgen Klopp and the board exhibited.
The recent criticism being hurled at Liverpool stems from their lack of activity in the transfer market. While they were one of the first clubs to do business this summer by bringing in Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig, they are yet to sign any new players since, instead sanctioning the sales of Harry Wilson, Marko Grujic and the highly gifted Taiwo Awoniyi.
All the while, Liverpool’s rivals have made some eye-catching moves in the transfer market in an attempt to enhance the overall quality of the squad. Manchester City even broke Premier League’s record by roping in England superstar Jack Grealish from Aston Villa.
That has attracted criticism even from Liverpool’s own sets of fans. But club legend Carragher, who had featured in over 700 competitive matches for the Reds, insists that the club’s transfer policy and model implemented by Jurgen Klopp and the board should be respected.
“I understand why fans are looking at other clubs and wondering why Liverpool aren’t doing more in the market. But there are certain things that other clubs do that Liverpool wouldn’t. Liverpool wouldn’t buy a striker for £100m who was 28. They just wouldn’t do that. It’s not their model, and we have to trust the model,” he said.
Carragher also shed light on the fact that Liverpool do not have a glaring weakness like other clubs while urging the club to splash on a new attacker as well as talking about the future of Harvey Elliott.
“Manchester United had some glaring areas that they needed to improve, and I don’t think Liverpool have obvious areas like that – the only one was centre-back, and by bringing in Ibrahima Konate, you could argue Liverpool are stronger at centre-back than any other club in the Premier League right now.”
“It wouldn’t be the end of the world if Liverpool didn’t bring in a midfielder or a forward, although personally, I’d like to see another attacking player,” he said.
Earlier this month, Carragher had hailed Harvey Elliott, predicting him to play a big role this season. He doubled down on his claims, stating, “I would like something to supplement the forwards, but maybe that could be Harvey Elliott who has impressed me in pre-season.” Carragher does make sense and it remains to be seen if Liverpool heed his advice anytime soon.
