Liverpool are hoping to sign Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig during the summer transfer window, and Jamie Carragher believes that the Ivorian International could be a success at the Premier League club.
Yan Diomande is regarded as one of the finest attacking talents in Europe right now. He has been exceptional for RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga. The youngster scored 13 goals and picked up 10 assists in all competitions. He is impressing in the World Cup with Ivory Coast as well.
Liverpool have already failed in an attempt to sign the player, and it remains to be seen whether they can convince the Bundesliga club to sell. They need more cutting edge in the final third, especially in wide areas.
Mohamed Salah has decided to leave the club, and they will need to replace him properly. The Reds are already without a replacement for Luis Diaz, who left last summer. Liverpool needs two quality wide players who will inject pace, flair, and unpredictability into the final third. They have already signed Victor Munoz from Osasuna, and signing the Ivorian winner would be ideal now.
“I thought he was fantastic in the first game of the World Cup. Less so in the second game, but still was a real danger,” Carragher said to Sky Sports, before adding, “I think what you’d be buying is potential. It’s not what he is right now. He’s a 19-year-old kid. He’s a young man. But when you look at him physically, he looks like he’s got all those attributes.
“You think of the success Liverpool have had in the past with powerful, quick, wide men. You think of [Mohamed] Salah and Sadio Mane, especially those two. He certainly looks like he’s got those type of traits. That’s a big thing that Liverpool lacked last season, pace in those wide areas. They’ve already got a signing in now from Spain, from Osasuna, Victor Munoz.
“Maybe they want a little bit of pace on the other side as well. I think it’s pretty obvious where Liverpool were lacking last season. That looks like where they’re going in the market. But is he worth it? Time will tell. As I said, Liverpool spent big last summer. Right now, a year on, we probably would say those players don’t look worth it.”
There is no doubt that the player has the pace and physicality to succeed in the Premier League. He could add a new dimension to the Liverpool attack with his explosive style of play. Regular football and England will help him improve as well. The move could be ideal for all parties.
However, Diomande has a long-term contract with the Bundesliga club, and they will not want to lose him easily. Liverpool will have to pay a premium in order to get the deal done. They might have to pay a club-record fee to sign him. They have already failed with a €100 million offer.
