Manchester United legend Jaap Stam feels a move away from Old Trafford could help Marcus Rashford get back to his best.
Just a few years back Marcus Rashford was at the peak of his power. He was scoring goals for fun and was carrying the Manchester United attack on his back but things haven’t been that great for him in the last 18 months and United great Jaap Stam feels the English international needs to join a team that plays better football to get back to his best.
During a chat with Koen Weijland on Viaplay, Stam got a question from one of the listeners regarding what is a nice club for Rashford.
Stam said via VoetbalPrimeur: “Rashford needs a club with players who make him play better football. When you see him at the moment, you see that people expect a lot from him and his way of playing. But he can’t show that now.”
Rashford’s gradual decline
During the 2022/23 season, the English international scored 30 goals and he even bagged 11 assists in his 56 outings. While the left-winger was on fire during that campaign, he hasn’t been able to replicate those performances.
Last season, he could only manage 14 goal contributions and his poor form cost him a place in the England team for Euro 2024. Nothing much has changed in the new campaign as he still looks far from his best. He only has one goal in his seven league outings.
Stam believes the 26-year-old could get back to his best as soon as those around him start to perform better. The United legend feels a club that plays better football, in general, could be a great place for Rashford.
Stam’s Critique of Rashford
The former Dutch centre-back went on to add: “An important aspect: it is also up to him. If you look at what he achieved a few years ago and what he is showing now… Then he has to look in the mirror and ask himself. What can I do differently so that I and the team perform better? He is also not looking for the assist enough.”
While Stam did suggest that a move away from Old Trafford to a better team could help, he feels the United graduate should look in the mirror and ponder about what he can do differently to return to what he was a couple of seasons back.
He will have to think of what changes he can make to get back to his best and help the team. The 52-year-old feels he is not looking for assists enough which is something that can surely help him regain his confidence.
