Jorginho has dismissed teammate Lorenzo Insigne’s Ballon d’Or suggestions, insisting he is focused on team glory above anything else.
Speaking during Italy’s training base, ahead of the UEFA Euro 2020 quarter-final clash between Italy and Belgium, Chelsea star Jorginho has played down suggestions of potential Ballon d’Or glory, as reported by Daily Mail.
The Chelsea midfielder has starred in Italy’s European Championship campaign so far, becoming an integral figure in the middle of the park. His anchoring role in midfield has indeed helped players like Manuel Locatelli, Nicolo Barella and Marco Verratti shine, helping the Azzurri emerge as one of the strongest teams in the competition.
A few days ago, Jorginho’s teammate Lorenzo Insigne suggested that the Chelsea midfielder be at least nominated for Ballon d’Or in light of his success for both club and country.
“I’m not the one deciding if he deserves the Ballon d’Or, but I hope he’ll be shortlisted, he deserves so, he is a great player. I call him the professor, and we are all happy to play with him,” said Insigne during a press conference.
Insigne and Jorginho were teammates during their time at Napoli. They spent four years together in Naples, primarily under the leadership of ex-Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri.
In addition to his success with Italy and Napoli, Jorginho was a vital cog in Chelsea’s success as well. Under Thomas Tuchel. the 29-year-old had become the midfield lynchpin, helping the Blues secure the Champions League crown this past season while driving them to a top-four finish in the league.
Jorginho, however, appears to have no ambition for gaining personal glory. “I don’t think about it,” he said at Italy’s training base on Wednesday when asked about a potential Ballon d’Or win. “Everything that is happening is the consequence of hard work.”
“My priority is the group and celebrating together with my teammates and friends. This is more beautiful than celebrating alone.”
The Italian is not the only Chelsea midfielder favoured as a potential Ballon d’Or candidate this year, with his teammate N’Golo Kante also becoming a topic among football fans. France’s shock elimination from the European Championship at the hands of Switzerland may hurt his chances of gaining any personal glory, though.
Italy, meanwhile, are set to face Belgium in an evenly matched quarter-final encounter later this evening, as Roberto Mancini’s men brace themselves for their first real test.
