Herculez Gomez has told Canadian striker Jonathan David to think hard about Manchester United links and insisted Aston Villa will suit him more.
There is a lot of talk about Premier League clubs looking for a top-draw striker, and some have links to Canadian star Jonathan David. The LOSC Lille star has performed consistently over the last few years for the Ligue 1 outfit and could make the big switch to England if things go according to plan.
Manchester United and Aston Villa are in the race for David, who has contributed to 16 goals this season, with Lille expecting a big bid to arrive from suitors. The links to the Premier League have been consistent over the last few years. But a move might materialise this month or in the summer.
Manchester United are looking for a new forward to complement the misfiring Rasmus Hojlund. They have had links to Serhou Guirassy, among others. But Jonathan David is also a good option. Similarly, Aston Villa have been in the market for attackers.
They have already seen problems tying up a deal for 30-year-old Felipe Anderson, with the Brazilian set to stay at Lazio. Unai Emery wants either a wide attacker or a striker to help out Ollie Watkins. Hence, signing someone like David makes plenty of sense.
Herculez Gomez has given his two cents about David’s links to Manchester United and Aston Villa. He has urged the striker to snub any approaches from the Red Devils and choose Emery’s side, commenting on those links on ESPN UK’s YouTube channel.
On the Manchester United links, Gomez said, “Let me just say that it doesn’t surprise me Jonathan David is being linked to these two teams. What team is better for him? Jonathan David, stay away from Manchester United. Stay away from the toxicity that is Manchester United, that is Erik ten Hag and that is the Glazers, as of this moment. Go as far away as possible as you can.”
Continuing his discussions, Gomez stepped on the subject of Aston Villa and continued, “Now, Aston Villa, Wow! You had my curiosity, but now you have my full attention. Let me throw out some names to you, Leon Bailey.”
“He is a great case of what Unai Emery and Aston Villa have been able to do for the player, under his previous two coaches at Villa, he wasn’t doing well and wasn’t the hype and promise you saw at Leverkusen. And they paid big money for him. But now under Unai Emery, we are seeing a player blossom at Aston Villa.”
“What does Unai Emery ask of his nine? You need the ability to stretch the backline, but when you don’t stretch it. Come underneath and act as a ten. Act as a playmaker. Be good with the ball. That is Jonathan David. With Unai Emery, he can be a prime player and a big player in the Premier League. I absolutely love this move for Jonathan David if it were to transpire.”
On the subject of ‘toxicity’, Manchester United can make their form count between now and the end of the season to prove their worth. Sure, there are problems within the club, but the team is on the mend that could still attract top-level players.
As for Aston Villa, they are showing massive progress under Emery, and surely that should attract a player of the stature of Jonathan David. Joining either side would prove satisfactory for the Canadian striker, who already has a 16-goal contribution this season and will look to outperform his best numbers at Lille or elsewhere.
